Swiss Fossil Vertebrates on Swiss Postal Stamps

021June 14, 2016

Once one of the PALAEOLOVE guys together with the staff of the Sauriermuseum Frick, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland, had the opportunity to develop a stamp edition focusing on Mesozoic fossil vertebrates on behalf of the Swiss Postal Service.

The series comprises three postal stamps, each of which with life reconstructions of one or two fossils that either move on the boundary layer between two media (terrestrial locomotion) or stir within a medium (flying and swimming). The three biotopes which had to be illustrated were: land (boundary layer ground/air), medium water, medium air.

On all stamps Swiss findings are shown:

  • Land: The 85 centimes stamp features the first Swiss theropod dinosaur (Saurischia) and a rhynchocephalian reptile (tuatara). The subject is safely based on a well preserved theropod skeleton with stomach contents discovered in the Late Triassic marls of the Frick locality Gruhalde, Canton of Aargau. The stomach contents record the last meal of the dinosaur and comprise amongst other things the bones and teeth of the tuatara.
  • Water: The 100 centimes stamp is dedicated to an ichthyosaur from the Early Jurassic clays of the Frick locality Gruhalde, Canton of Aargau, documented by an interesting skull ruin. Ichthyosaurs were marine reptiles similar to dolphins and lived chiefly in a pelagic way.
  • Air: The 140 centimes stamp is devoted to a long tailed pterosaur that is well documented by a skeleton from the late Triassic of the Tinzenhorn mountain, Canton of Grisons. Pterosaurs were active flying reptiles which dominated the Mesozoic sky.

Further information on these fossils and the stamp series itself can be taken from BRINKMANN (2010a, 2010b, 2010c).
